Do it in Auckland

Pin It Now! Do it in Auckland Banner outside Auckland International Airport

I was up in Auckland (City of Sails) last week and as you are driving out of the airport you are greeted by a big banner in the shape of a sail saying “Do it in Auckland.” That particular slogan does not seem very appropriate because of how some people may take it. What do you think?

Kaffir

Pin It Now! KAFFIR! Kaffir Lime Leaves
I was in a supermarket the other day and a friend drew my attention towards a jar of Kaffir Lime Leaves. This caught me by surprise because I had no idea that such a product existed. It wasn’t so much the product that caught me by surprise, it was the name, KAFFIR! and I couldn’t help but take a photo of it.

I am from Southern Africa and KAFFIR was a derogatory term used to describe black southern Africans during the Apartheid era (much in the same way as the 'N' word). The term is still regarded as being highly offensive and stirs a few emotions in many a people when it is used.

You learn something new every day.

Note – I took this photo with my phone hence the poor quality. At least you get to see what I was going on about.

Entrance to Te Puia, Rotorua

Pin It Now!
Entrance to Te Puia, Rotorua(click on image for large view)

We just got back from a weekend away in Rotorua which is well known for its geothermal activity. The presence of the geothermal activity brings along a sulphurous, flatulent smell which you cannot get away from. We really didn’t get to do much because the weather was not good at all but nonetheless it was nice to get away for a while.

The photo is of the entrance way to Te Puia, a tourist attraction in Rotorua where you can get to experience a geothermal valley, Maori culture, arts and crafts.
